During the Renaissance the Italians, like most of the world, drew their ideas of fashion from France. The wealthy class, who could afford it, bought their clothes from France, while the middle class simply had people paid to make cheap copies of the current styles. After World War II, however, there was a rush to find a new economy in order for the country to recover. They found a market in selling shoes, accessories, leather goods, and cheap clothes modeled after the French styles to America. After a fashion show held in Florence in 1951 Italians finally had a style of their own, not borrowed from the French. Movie stars started to wear extravagant Italian gowns but it was not until the 1970s that Italian menswear started to become famous through people such as Armani. Now a days Italy holds fashion shows that are known through out the world and has a booming economy supported by many jobs related to the making of shoes, clothes, accessories, and leather goods.
